LLOYDS TSB LEAGUES – DIVISION 1-3 ROUND UP
DIVISION ONE
Bonymaen ran riot to cross for 20 tries at Parc Mawr in a 136-14 win over bottom club Brynmawr with winger Lyndon Johnson going over the line on seven occasions. He also kicked a conversion for a 37-point haul.
Maesteg stay top after a convincing 50-19 win at Fleur de Lys with six tries resulting and 20 points from the boot of Mark David, though Darren Cook scored two of the three ‘Flower’ tries in reply.
Glamorgan Wanderers are in a promotion spot after a hard-earned 17-6 win over Carmarthen Athletic with David Willey and Jonathan Luff tries and seven points from Mark Heywood, who reached 200 for the club.
Whitland gave the students of UWIC a 47-13 pounding with seven tries including abrace by young Kiwi lock Rawhiti Williams and fly half Aled Davies notched a try and six conversions.
Fly half Brett Davey scored two tries, four conversions and a penalty as Beddau beat off Narberth 36-26, despite a late bid by the Otters and Bridgend Athletic outscored Blackwood 3-2 on tries, but the latter were helped by Jeremy Lloyd’s boot as they won 25-18.
Builth Wells just held off Tonmawr 24-22, despite three tries by the losers – one by prolific wing Lenny Woodard – but Rob Lloyd’s boot carried the day and Jamie Brown snapped up a drop goal.
DIVISION TWO
Ystrad Rhondda kept their hold in the East after turning Crosyceiliog 26-8, but Abercynon shocked Newport Saracens 52-12 and a last-minute penalty took Llantwit Fardre to a 21-19 win at Tredegar.
Merthyr’s fine run continued as they beat off Treorchy 29-14 at The Wern and Rumney kept in contention for a promotion place after winning 41-24 at Risca.
The West title is between leaders Waunarlwydd and a fast-closing Cwmllynfell with the latter winning 41-6 at Corus, but having the return that was due for Wednesday, delayed until May 6.
Waunarlwydd were hard pressed to win 15-6 at Mumbles, but promotion looks out of reach for Dunvant and Kidwelly, with the latter crashing badly at Pencoed. The bottom four clubs all lost.
DIVISION THREE
Bargoed went an amazing 50th successive league win without defeat and they are on the brink of the Three East title after defeating Cwmbran 36-18, being unbeaten since February 2003. Jamie Howells scored 16 of their points. Pill Harriers confirmed second place with an emphatic 51-3 thrashing of Llanishen.
Rhydyfelin still cannot shake off Mountain Ash in the South-East as both won again, though Abercwmboi ran the Old Firm to a 13-10 scoreline, while Ruthin a good 26-22 win over Tonyrefail in third place.
South-West leaders Maesteg Quins found Ammanford a tough nut to crack, but lead by nine points after both Seven Sisters and Nantyffyllon fell to shock defeats.
Team of the day was Glynneath, who registered their first win of the season, beating Ystalyfera by 34-22.
Loughor need a maximum of three wins from six games to capture the West title after beating Hendy 65-21, though Gorseinon, Penclawdd and Aberystwyth gained home wins.
