In Saturday’s games, Maesteg gained a hard-fought 24-12 win at Bonymaen with veteran scrum half Kevin Ellis crossing for a try and his brother Carle went over for Bridgend Athletic, who defeated Tonmawr 21-18. For Maesteg, skipper Karl Hocking took the Welsh record for tries in a league career to 120.


Glamorgan Wanderers gained a promotion boost as Beddau fell surprisingly by 28-18 at home to a very lively UWIC side and Whitland were held to a 8-8 draw at Narberth. The Wanderers need two points to ensure Premier rugby next season.


Brynmawr may have ended a clear last, but they were the first club to finish their fixtures, losing 39-0 at Builth Wells, for whom the former Rhymney wing John Thurston ran in three tries.


Carmarthen Athletic gained a superb 30-13 win at Llangennech and retiring No 8 Graham Evans grabbed his usual try, while a Richard Jones touchdown ensured that Fleur de Lys defeated Blackwood 16-6.


DIVISION 2
Waunarlwydd and Cwmllynfell are neck and neck for the West title with 63 points each and three games remaining, but they meet on May 14 at Cwmllynfell.


Banwen have made a late charge for third spot after beating Dunvant 42-11 and have four games still to play, while the situation at the bottom is that Tondu and Newcastle Emlyn are relegated with two from six clubs to join them. Big matches to come include the home and away clashes f Cwmavon and Nantymoel.


Ystrad Rhondda stuttered but beat Tredegar 23-0 and need a maximim of four point to win the title, but Abercynon and Merthyr battle it out for the other promotion spot after both gained away wins.


At the bottom, relegated teams Treorchy and Risca met, but the Zebras were on fire and won 87-0, while Hirwaun are also down and the fourth spot is still undecided.
