KONICA MINOLTA CUP KICKS OFF THE NEW SEASON

Club graphic

There are 31 matches in the Preliminary Round and the winners will be joined by the remaining 129 clubs from Division 2 down in the First Round on 24 September.

The pick of the ties in the Preliminary Round is the clash between Tonmawr and Bargoed. The home team were relegated from Division 1 to Division 2 West last season, while Bargoed continued their rise up the ranks by clinching a second successive promotion to Division 2 East. It took the full might of Cardiff to put paid to Bargoed’s Konica Minolta Cup ambitions last season – their only defeat of another brilliant campaign.

Bridgend Athletic will have home advantage over near neighbours South Wales Police, while Old Penarthians will tackle Rhiwbina at Cwrt-y-Vil in another local derby. Among the teams who received byes in the Preliminary Round are Banwen, who last season knocked-out Premiership sides Newbridge and Bedwas before losing to Pontypridd in the quarter-finals. They will travel to the Tonyrefail in Round One.

Six of the Worthington Welsh Districts quarter-finalists will also miss the Preliminary Round, but losing semi-finalists Markham are drawn away at Llandeilo and runners-up Glyncoch have a plum home tie against Treorchy. Worthington Welsh Districts Cup winners Trefil will host Felinfoel in a fascinating First Round tie.

Only two North Wales clubs will feature in the Preliminary Round. Ruthin go to Talywain while Mold entertain centenary celebrating Heol-y-Cyw. North Wales cup holders Nant Conwy will face a stern test from the newly-promoted Maesteg Quins in Round One.

The First Round will see Rumney and Old Illtydians clash in a Cardiff derby at Riverside Park, while Llantwit Fardre, who reached the fifth round last season, have a home tie against Alltwen.
