The team hit the shops yesterday to meet fans at McArthurGlen in Bridgend before the region’s three Lions stars, Gavin Henson, Shane Williams and Ryan Jones hosted an open forum at Pencoed Rugby Club in the evening.

Crowds turned up to see the Celtic League Champions at McArthurGlen and over 250 fans packed into Pencoed Rugby Club for a two-hour question and answer session with the Lions stars.

Ospreys Regional Rugby Manager, Derwyn Jones, said: “We’ve been amazed by the number of people who went out of their way to see us yesterday. It’s been a fantastic year for us and we’re fully aware that we wouldn’t be where we are today without the support of the whole region. So it’s been great to get out and meet the fans who have supported us so well and hear their views and opinions.

“We would like to think that we have grasped the concept of regional rugby more than anyone. We have always wanted the people of Bridgend to feel part of a genuine region and we’ve had a great response from former supporters of the Celtic Warriors, so it’s been great to give something back.”

One fan said: “The atmosphere was fantastic with loads of players being really friendly and more than willing to chat. I also managed to get a ball signed by ten of the players. I’d just like to say thanks to all of them for coming to Bridgend and giving up their time. Things like this can only make the Ospreys more and more popular.”

Pencoed Rugby Club straddles the border between Ospreys and Cardiff Blues territory. However, judging by last night’s turnout it is clear to see where the club’s allegiance looks likely to be. Pencoed Rugby Club secretary, Gary Morris, said “The forum last night was a great success. It was fantastic to have the team visit Pencoed, and we were really pleased to see such high profile players.

“We had a great turnout from the fans in the area, and the children that came especially enjoyed getting a chance to have their heroes sign autographs. We have one full coach and a minibus going down to the Wasps match next week and we’re very much looking forward to it. We’re very excited about being part of the Ospreys region.”

Derwyn Jones said: “The reception from Pencoed Rugby Club has been great. In fact, it looks like they may be sending down two coach loads to our game against the Wasps next week at the Regional Rugby Stadium.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome them into the Ospreys region and look forward to a long and fruitful relationship with the club.”
