Jones handed Ospreys armband

Jones handed Ospreys armband

The selection of Jones as skipper follows his stint as Captain for his country during the recent summer tour to Argentina. Jones’s experience strengthened calls for him to be the successor of hooker Barry Williams, who stepped down due to injury at the end of last season. Ospreys Head Coach Lyn Jones says that 28-cap Jones is the ideal candidate for the role.

“We decided some time ago that Duncan was the man to lead us into what will be a big season for the Ospreys,” coach Jones said. “He led Wales with distinction in Argentina and has already proven to be a fine Ospreys Captain when he stepped up last season.

“He leads by example both on and off the field, knows how to read a game, has sound judgement and has respect throughout the squad.”

“It is an honour to be asked to Captain the Ospreys, although I am fortunate to have already stood in last year following Barry’s injury,” said Jones. “We have a mix of youth and experience and I will get a lot of help as we have decision makers throughout the side.

“The region has shown its ambition with strong signings and with the boys returning from long term injury I am sure supporters will see a strong Ospreys side next season.

“Last year we worked hard as a group and things started to come together towards the end of the year, but we will enter next season in a confident frame of mind.”
