Round Up: National Leagues East

Llanishen Team Manager Peter Tucker is still optimistic about his side’s chances of avoiding relegation despite going down to their eighth straight league defeat, this time against Rhydyfelin.

The winless Cardiff club, who sit bottom of Division Two East, saw their visitors race in four tries in their 25-8 loss, but Tucker believes the side are just one good result away from turning their season around.

He said: “Of course we’re on a bad run and it’s very sad, but the boys remain together as a unit and we all know we can turn it around.

“We’ve had some nail biting losses against some of the teams at the top of the division and we really thought we were going to win today but it just didn’t happen.

“I really believe that once we break the duck our season will spark into life and we will be able to climb to safety. We’ve got Builth Wells away next and we’ll go there to get that win.”

Llanishen fell behind to an early try from speedster Mike McCabe but levelled matters when prop Matthew Gee powered over. Rhydyfelin centre Rhys Chinnock restored his side’s advantage before the break with a neat score and in the second half his centre partner Ryan Healey crashed over to make the game safe. McCabe’s second secured a bonus point while the home side’s only other points came from a Grant Morris penalty.

A late try from Garndiffaith fullback Gareth Jones sent his side top of Division Three East after they overcame a determined Nelson side 19-12. The Gwent club were made to fight all the way by their hosts and the game looked to be heading for a draw before Jones’s salvo won his side the spoils.

Elsewhere, a storming first half showing from Blaina was enough to see off the challenge of Rhymney at Central Park. Tries from Ross Watts and Stuart Tandy put the home club in the driving seat and they led 15-5 at the break, but it took a late effort form Darren Crimen to secure the points in a hard fought 22-17 victory.

In Division Five Adam Brake scored a brace in Usk’s 48-0 thumping of Oakdale.
