The two Principality Premiership sides are the only clubs through to the quarter-finals of the Konica Minolta Cup who have never reached a tournament final. The Wanderers will be home to Newport and Cross Keys will have ground advantage against Neath whilst Ebbw Vale and Bridgend travel to Aberavon and Pontypridd respectively.

“Everyone just wants a home draw at this stage and we have a few points to prove having already played Newport once this season,” said Wanderers Head Coach Richard Hodges. “Recently we have put a lot of emphasis on our defence – we have not conceded a try in our last four games – and we know we are just two games away from what would be a memorable day for the club.”

While Wanderers clinched their quarter-final place with a 25-6 win at Bargoed in Round 5, Premiership leaders Neath are there by virtue of outscoring Tonmawr 3-2 in tries in their 20-20 draw.

“The cup is all about one-off occasions and we had the fright of our lives at Tonmawr,” said Assistant Coach Gruff Rees. “We were a bit flat going into that game but, with the squad we have, we are confident about travelling away in the quarter-finals. We know everyone is there to shoot at us but we use that as our motivating ammunition.”

Aberavon – who ended Cardiff’s cup hopes last weekend with a 30-23 victory – now face high flying Ebbw Vale with captain Ian Moore declaring: “It is great to be at home and it is all about what happens on the day. We have had hard games to get this far and Ebbw Vale are doing very well yet again so, having already beaten us once this season, they will be pretty confident.”

Bridgend have to travel to Sardis Road and Pontypridd Team Manager Wayne Cullen said they were relishing the challenge.

“We are local rivals and almost always have exciting matches so we know we will have to be at our best,” he said. “However, we like the cup – it adds spice to the season – and it is critical to be at home at this stage.”
