Davies admits title dream is in tatters

Llanelli Scarlets Coach Phil Davies admits their Magners League title bid is effectively over after their home defeat to Leinster.

The Irish province powered through a fragile Scarlets defence three times at a rain-soaked Stradey Park to extend their lead to 11 points above Munster.

The Scarlets are a further three points behind and Davies conceded that it will take a miracle to remain in the title race with just four matches remaining.

Davies said: “We’ve got a huge mountain to climb with just four or five matches to go. “We’re really disappointed because the weather conditions were poor. But give credit to Leinster because they were great value for their win.

“They controlled the ball and scored points when they had to. We showed plenty of endeavour but lacked control and that has cost us. Both teams want to score tries but we didn’t deal with the conditions. We got back into the match at 17-10 and we had momentum but we quickly conceded a third try.”

Leinster Coach Michael Cheika said: “This was an important win for us in the context of the league but more importantly to get something back from our big 52-23 defeat to them in Dublin.

“That really hurt us and we wanted to bounce back and prove that we can win against the top teams away from home.

“We’re four points closer to the title but now we must focus on the match against Munster in two week’s time. Title or no title, that’s what we have to do. We will enjoy this win and get ready for the challenge ahead.

“Munster, Llanelli Scarlets, Edinburgh and Cardiff Blues are all lurking around us and we know they will be coming after us.”
