In a nail-biting finish to the group stage, Wales lost out to Argentina on points difference after finishing level on group points. Wales had opened well against newcomers Moldova with a 52-7 win but against Argentina their momentum was checked by a strong Puma side.

In the event Wales had to settle for a 21-21 draw leaving the side requiring either victory over New Zealand in their last pool match or to lose by no more than 12 points.

It was a tall order for Wales against a New Zealand side that had been ruthlessly efficient throughout the day. In the event Wales were unable to break down the All Blacks suffocating defence nor able to prevent the Kiwis from scoring four tries for a 24-0 win.

Summing up the day, Coach Gareth Baber said: ?Frankly it was frustrating. We started well against Moldova and piled up what we thought would be enough points in the bank.

?Against Argentina we showed defensive frailties that let them in for early scores. We were probably a bit unfortunate to meet New Zealand in the third round of matches. By that time they were well into theie stride.?
