Wizards set up tough pre-season schedule

Aberavon coach Simon King says a tough pre-season programme will help his side in their push for a top three Principality Premiership finish.

The Wizards finished in sixth place last term and have arranged for warm-up matches against the unfamiliar opposition of London Welsh, Coventry and Waterloo in August.

Bolstered by Wales U18 pair James King and Ben John, coach King believes his squad is stronger than last season and capable of testing themselves against sides from England’s Division 1.

“We have arranged a series of tough pre season friendlies against progressively tougher opposition as we build up to the new season.

“It’s a good fixture for us to play London Welsh as the first warm-up game. It is their first match since becoming a full-time professional side and will be a good measure for us.

“We then welcome Maesteg who will be looking for revenge after we beat them in the penultimate game of last season.

“We were sixth in the premier league last season and are looking to consolidate and improve. That’s always the target.

“The spine of the side is pretty much as it was last year and we have been proactive in the transfer market over the summer to bolster our squad.

“These fixtures are intended to show our intent to broaden our horizons and challenge our players ahead of what will be a very competitive season in a tough league.”

Aberavon’s pre season matches: (all played at Talbot Athletic Ground).
