A new look Wales squad only just managed to scrape through to the semi after clinching a nail-biting 22-21 victory over USA in the quarter-finals.

Wales claimed two points from the tournament to raise their IRB series total to eight with South Africa now having a comfortable lead at the top of the table with 84 points. England are second on 68 while Hong Kong victors Fiji leap-frog New Zealand into third place on 62 with the Kiwis (60) and Argentina (56) not far behind.

The next leg of the series heads for Australia for the three-day Adelaide Sevens on 3-5 April newly-crowned Rugby World Cup Sevens champions Wales facing New Zealand in Pool D on the Friday night.

Paul John’s team beat Gordon Tietjens’ side 15-14 in their World Cup quarter final and also overcame the Kiwis in Wellington in February, so there is much riding on the outcome of that match.

The other team’s in Wales group are USA, who so nearly defeated Wales in Hong Kong, and the big hitting Tongans.
