The home of Welsh rugby had already staged five matches in the 2012 Olympic Games with four women’s games and one men’s game but this afternoon was the first time an Olympic football match was played under a closed roof when world champions Japan tackled South Africa in the women’s tournament.
Japan advanced into the quarter-finals after a goalless draw with South Africa and could be set for a last eight clash with Great Britain should the hosts beat Brazil.
The iconic Cardiff venue which has staged a host of major football events such as FA Cup Final, Carling Cup Final and the Community Shield has appealed to fans and event promoters all over the world with its fully-retractable roof, removable pitch system and city centre location.
