Dion Jones scored the only Welsh try as Wilson’s side held off a late Irish surge to win 17-15. Twelve points from the boot of fly half Sam Davies sealed the win leaving Wilson upbeat ahead of next weekend’s clash with France.
“We rued a few missed opportunities in the first half, not just from the boot but attacking opportunities too,” he said.
“The forward effort was pleasing, we had a great set-piece in the Junior World Championship and we wanted to build on that.
“We were pleased with the way the players took our messages on board after half time and it was a gutsy effort all round to hold on for the win.”
Wales had trailed 7-3 at the break and although they were outscored by two tries to one by their Irish opponents, it did not matter at the full time whistle.
Luke McGrath and Tom Daly both crossed for Mike Ruddock’s side but in truth the manner of Wales’ victory could have been more impressive.
Davies struggled with the boot in the first half while Jones missed a clear try scoring opportunity inside the first quarter.
And Wilson knows his side must take these kind of chances if they are to return home from France with a victory in their next game.
“There are certainly areas to work on ahead of a huge challenge in France next weekend,” he added.
“That will be a huge challenge for the players but they will have gained a lot of confidence from this evening.
“Momentum is key in the Six Nations. We lost this fixture last year so it’s great to start off with a win.”
