A young United side went through the pool stages of the challenge competition held at Butlins Minehead unbeaten and conceded just one try in the whole tournament.

Tiaan Sparrow added a medal, awarded for the day’s ‘magic moment’, to the team’s silverware when he was singled out for some terrific tackling to go with this 11-try haul over five matches.

First up were Minehead Barbarians and Amman despatched their hosts by eight tries to nil, with Tian crossing for his hat-trick and Tom Philips (2), Tana Evans (2) and Oliver Rice (1) all adding to the total.

London Wasps were beaten 4-0 with Thomas James joining Tana, Oliver and Tom again on the score sheet, before two different teams from Monmouth were put to the sword.

The first went down 5-0, with Jake Lewis joining the try-fest adding to anther brace from Tiaan and further contributions from Thomas and Tana.

Monmouth’s second side were the only team to score against the West Wales outfit, but they were still beaten 2-1 in a closely fought semi-final – with Tiaan again finishing off the Amman scores.

After overcoming their fellow Welsh side Amman United met Lutterworth in the final and lifted the Tigers Challenge trophy after a seven try rout.

Ceris Phillips and Connor Quinn lead the charge and Tiaan completed his total with four tries to add to strikes from Tom, Jake and Tana.

“The Monmouth side we faced in the semi-final was the best side we have encountered in a two year unbeaten run,” said Amman United coach Adrian Phillips.

“It was a tough tackling game and the players all did extremely well to secure the win and get us into the final, which produced another great performance from the whole squad and another win to be proud of.”
