The tighthead has been sidelined since the end of the summer tour to New Zealand, where he featured in all three Tests, having undergone surgery on a shoulder problem.

The 23-year-old was initially expected to miss the first two months of the season, leaving him in a race against time to prove his fitness ahead of the Under Armour Series in November.

But Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac confirmed Lee is well ahead of schedule in his recovery and could play some part when the Scarlets host Connacht in their fourth Guinness PRO12 fixture a week on Saturday.

“Samson is on track for somewhere around the Connacht game, if not it will be Treviso a week later,” said Pivac.

“Those sorts of injuries are given a 12 to 16-week recovery period and early on he was put into that 14-week bracket. But, because he has been progressing so well, it has been dropped down to 12 weeks.

“We are consulting with Wales, he has been up and had some testing done and everyone is happy, we are all on the same page. He is doing everything well.

“He is a lot more involved in training this week and if he comes through this week there is a good chance he will be involved against Connacht. It is a step-by-step process but it is looking good.”
