Coach’s View: Wellington – Day One

Wales Sevens head coach Gareth Williams takes a look at day one of the Wellington Sevens, where after a bright start against Russia, they tasted defeat to two strong sides in Canada and Scotland.

Disappointing would be an understatement. We failed to impose ourselves in the two deciding games in the group.

We were too expansive in turning ball over – something we prided ourselves on in the first two blocks. We followed too many positive phases of play with an immediate negative phase. This would just kill our momentum and change the flow.

Canada and Scotland are two superb sides who took full advantage of our rueful decision-making around the offloads, but the best part of sevens is that we have the opportunity to pick ourselves off the ground and go again tomorrow.

There have been some harsh words during the day within the squad, but the group is as tight as I’ve been involved in. These disappointments and challenges will feed into our ambitions for the next year leading towards the Commonwealth Games and the Rugby World Cup Sevens.

This starts tomorrow with our Challenge Trophy quarter-final against Pool A’s Papua New Guinea.

Wales face Papua New Guinea at 11:44 (local time). Click here for all the latest videos and live streams from the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series.
