Snowsill braced for step up in class

Fly half Elinor Snowsill is ready for the step up in intensity as Wales get ready to begin their Women’s Six Nations campaign with a trip to Italy.

Wales are unbeaten under the guidance of head coach Rowland Phillips and claimed a morale-boosting win over Ireland ahead of the start of the championship.

That success saw Phillips’ side overturn an early deficit to come out on top, but Snowsill knows things are only going to get tougher for Wales in the weeks ahead.

“Going into any Six Nations there is pressure,” said the talented back. “The Ireland game was the first I have been involved in with Wales where we have come from two tries down. That was good for the confidence, but that was a friendly and the Six Nations is a whole different beast and we need to make that step up now.”

Wales travel to the Stadio Pacifico Carotti on Saturday looking to start their tournament with a bang.

A trip to Jesi in northern Italy represents a tough start for Wales, who finished in fourth place in last season’s championship, but Snowsill believes the team are in a good place.

“I think we are a lot more prepared than we ever have been,” she said. “We’re training a lot more, our meetings are now a lot more professional and we’re enjoying working with the coaches.

“We know Rowland has been there and done it with the men – he’s coached at the highest level and that helps us a lot with what we want to achieve in this Six Nations.

“In the past we’ve had a lot of trouble with Italy, I’m not really sure why. Maybe we have taken them a bit lightly, but that won’t be happening this time and hopefully we can get that consistency of performance which we need to be successful.”

Head coach Phillips added: “We are positive about where we are at the moment. I keep going on about the Ireland game, but for the players to turn things around in that match after going two tries down shows we’re going in the right direction.”
