St Clears continue to climb up the National Leagues having secured the Three West A title and promotion to Division Two West.

The newly-crowned champions beat Cardigan 7-0, but had to wait until Milford Haven beat Cardigan 22-0 to celebrate the title triumph.

“It’s nice to get hold of the trophy. We left ourselves with a bit of work to do and we were relying on Milford Haven to do a job for us so to finally get our hands on it is incredible,” said head coach Mike Jones.

St Clears opened the season with four victories before back-to-back defeats to Milford Haven and Cardigan halted their progress.

“With Milford Haven, they caught us cold that day,” Jones added. “We probably thought we were a bit better than we were. We then played Cardigan and it was only with the bounce of the ball that they won, we felt quite hard done by.

“But we always felt that we could turn those results around.”

And that is exactly what they did as they won their next 12 league games to clinch the title but Jones believes their narrow 18-17 win over Pembroke in December was decisive.

“It’s been a massive squad effort this season. When we narrowly beat Pembroke that was the turning point as we had a lot of players out that day and boys playing out of position.

“We never planned for promotion, we just wanted to try and finish in the top half and then go for promotion next season so to get it already is massive

“I wouldn’t say it’s been a fairy tale, but it’s been one hell of a season.”
