Glantaf gunning for revenge

Newport HS and Ysgol Glantaf meet in a repeat of last season’s Trophy Final when they clash again in the third round of the Welsh Schools & Colleges League.

It was the Gwent side that came out on top at the Arms Park in December, finally winning 25-22 after leading 19-0 at one stage, and they will be seeking their first win of the new campaign on home soil in Round 3.

Both teams have met the champions, Coleg Sir Gar, already with Newport HS going down to a 24-7 defeat at Llandovery RFC and Glantaf losing 31-17 at home. That result for the Cardiff-based school came after they had beaten Coleg Llandrillo 31-15 in the open round.

Jake Hillman, Jack Price and Cai Davies scored tries for Glantaf against the champions and they will once again be instrumental in helping their side attempt to avenge last season’s defeat by Newport HS.

Coleg Sir Gar director of rugby Euros Evans was full of praise for Glantaf and will be hoping his side can make it a hat-trick of wins when they host Coleg Gwent. Their unbeaten run in all matches this season was broken at Millfield last week when they were beaten 38-33.

“It was a really difficult game at Glantaf because they were really dogged. They gave us a really tough battle,” said Evans

“I likened it to an old style cup tie when you are going to a team you know you should be capable of beating, but rise to the occasion. There really wasn’t much in it until five minutes before the end. They don’t have the strength in depth of the colleges, but there is plenty of talent in their team.”

Coleg Gwent have also opened up with two wins having beaten Pembrokeshire Colleges 34-14 in the first round and then hung on to take the scalp of Coleg Llandrillo, 24-22, last week. Dylan Davies, Duan Thomas, Ewan Rosser and Matthew Jefferies got their tries against the north Walians, who came right back into the contest with three second half tries from Rhys Henderson, Peter Jones and Bailey Rae.

Bridgend College, who opened their account with a 20-12 home win over Llandovery, scoring three first half tries before conceding two after the break, have the tough task of travelling to face Coleg Y Cymoedd at Sardis Road. Pembrokeshire Colleges host Gower College at Neyland RFC in the other game.

In a tense game at The Gnoll on Tuesday night, Neath Port Talbot College beat Cardiff & Vale College 17-10.
Home skipper Luke Scully kicked his side into a 26th minute lead with a simple penalty and then he converted a try wide out on the left by full back Dewi Cross to make it 10-3 to NPTC at the break

Frankie Jones then rounded off a 50 metre move as he ran onto a neat chip ahead over the last defender by scrum half Iwan Temlett for a try that Scully once again improved. CAVC hit back with the try of the night, full back Tomny Lamerton touching down at the posts after a 70 metre move that featured six pairs of hands.
