Brookson stars in Coleg Gwent win

Gwent College turned on the style, and piled on the points, as they got back to winning ways in the Welsh Schools & Colleges League with a 38-0 home win over Whitchurch HS.

Having pushed reigning champions Coleg Sir Gar very hard the previous week in an 18-3 defeat, former Wales outside half Matthew Jones’s side cruised to another big win at Pandy Park to make it three out of four.

They hit Whitchurch with a sucker punch right at the start as Gwent centre Aneurin Owen latched onto a cheeky grubber kick in behind the visitors’ defence for a try at the posts. Evan Lloyd added the extras and then improved a try by full back Luke Shore.

It was 19-0 by the break after home hooker Jack Gillard converted a five metre line-out into a try. There were three more tries in the second Half to complete the scoring with Ewan Rosser, Rob Brookson and Duane Thomas all crossing and Lloyd and Thomas adding conversions.

Rosser’s try came from a pin-point cross-kick on the Whitchurch 22 that ended with a try in the right corner, while back row man Brookson raced over from 35 metres. Thomas showed a neat sidestep to cross at the posts for the final score.

The rest of the games in Round 4 on Wednesday, 4 October (kick-offs all 2.30pm) see last season’s finalists, Sir
Gar and Coleg Y Cymoedd both looking to extend their winning runs. Sir Gar host Bridgend College, who opened with a home win over Llandovery College (20-12) but were then beaten 21-3 at Sardis Road by last season’s runners-up, Cymoedd, in Round 3.

Cymoedd travel west to face Pembrokeshire Rugby, while Newport HS host Cardiff & Vale College and Glantaf entertain Gower College. In north Wales, Llandrillo welcome Llandovery College.
