Watts worked for the union for 12 years within the regional and national performance programme. Along with working directly with elite, young players, Watts played a major role in setting up and managing competitions and programmes including the Welsh Schools & Colleges League.

He will continue to be involved with the WRU on a consultancy basis on projects such as supporting WRU Women’s and Girls Manager Caroline Spanton in shaping and delivering a Strategic Plan for the Women’s and Girls’ Performance Game.

WRU Head of Rugby Performance Geraint John said, “First and foremost I’d like to thank Gethin for his hard work and dedication to player development on and off the field over the past 12 years, firstly in working directly with players within two of our regional academies to enhance their on and off field development, putting many of them on course for professional careers, and more recently in playing a key part in our international and domestic performance pathway programmes from a national perspective.

“We will retain Gethin’s services on some key projects such as helping to shape the Women’s Performance Strategic Plan, a key priority for us at present.”

Watts added, “I’d like to thank the WRU for all the opportunities and experiences working for the organisation has given me. The responsibility of looking after the most talented players in Welsh Rugby has been a privilege and would not have been possible had it not been for the expertise of many people along the way.

“I’m looking forward to supporting Caroline Spanton and her staff and adding impetus to the exciting area of the women’s performance game, utilising my experience in implementing development programmes and structures, while exploring some new opportunities outside of the WRU.”
