Felinfoel storm to title

Once their play-off disappointment has subsided Felinfoel can proudly reflect on their best season in a decade.

The West Walians stormed to the Division One West title with 17 wins from their 22 matches to finish 16 points clear of nearest challengers Dunvant and marked the first title since their 2007/08 Division Two West triumph.

However the season would end on a losing note as they missed out on promotion to the National Championship after going down 53-33 on aggregate over two legs to Division One West Central champions Maesteg Quins.

“It was a great achievement for us to win the league, with a new coach and a young side – only the second year out of youth for a lot of them,” said club secretary Clive Richards.

“It probably was one game too far for us with Maesteg Quins, we played really well up there but I think in the second game, particularly in the second half, they were just a much better side.

“We’ve got to take the disappointment, but we’ll regroup now and next year hopefully try and do produce the same again.”

Felinfoel’s 52-33 win at title rivals Dunvant back on November 11 was the standout result of the season, according to Richards.

He said: “We lost at home to Dunvant by a point early on in the Plate and then went up there a few weeks later and were absolutely brilliant.

“We really ran them off the park and I think that was the time we thought we really had the makings of a good side.”
