In a campaign that will live long in the memory, the Seaweeds followed up their dramatic last-gasp WRU National Bowl triumph in style as they were crowned champions of Three West Central A.

Porthcawl stormed to the title with 21 wins out of 22, losing just one game all year, and sealed the deal with a 31-10 defeat of eventual runners-up Birchgrove at South Road in their penultimate match.

As well as racking up 98 league points in total, scoring 837 points and running in 126 tries, the side shipped just 13 tries – the least by any team across the entire WRU National Leagues.

“It’s best season we’ve had, certainly in living memory,” said team manager Ian McDonald.
“To win the Bowl and then go on and win the league – it’s a hell of an achievement.

“And to win the league so convincingly is testament to our defensive play as well; I think if you look at the stats we’ve had the least number of tries scored against us in our league and pretty much in every other league as well.”

Porthcawl’s season will be remembered in particular for their exploits in the Bowl, but McDonald also pointed to league victories at Birchgrove and then Swansea Uplands within the space of four days in April as two key games in their success.

Having achieved back-to-back promotions, Porthcawl can now look forward to life in Two West Central next season.
