Huge backlog no obstacle for Cefneithin

The 2017/18 season is unlikely to be one that anyone at Cefneithin will forget in a hurry.

It was a campaign that saw the club win 21 of their 22 matches, racking up 102 league points on their way to lifting the Division Three West Central C title.

But, heading into April, they had exactly half of their 22 fixtures still to play due to a horrendous backlog of postponed matches from earlier in the season.

“It’s been pretty frantic really,” said fixture secretary Dennis Jones. “Towards the end of the season we played five games in 10 days; how we managed to win them all I don’t know, but we did!

“To play two midweek games a day apart with work commitments and everything takes it’ll toll but credit to the boys, they stuck at it and, thankfully, we finished on a high.”

Cefneithin finished 15 points clear of nearest challengers Cwmllynfell – who inflicted their only defeat of the campaign, a narrow 18-17 loss on April 21.

They also scored 966 points and ran 145 tries along the way.  It’s our best season ever,” said Jones.
“Promotion was the aim but there were some tough sides in that division.

“Cwmllynfell seemed to be the strongest while Pantyffynnon were pushing until the end to try and get promotion.
“When we beat Cwmllynfell at home, we thought we were in with a chance; it was a tough game and we came through it.”

Jones also picked out young scrum-half Steffan Davies, who scored 42 tries during the campaign, for special praise.
