PREVIEW: RGC ready to rock

Mark Jones has told his RGC 1404 side to lay down a Principality Premiership marker on Friday night as they welcome defending champions Merthyr to Parc Eirias in front of the BBC Wales Scrum V cameras (kick-off 7.15pm).

The Gogs currently lie third in the table and stunned Pontypridd with an impressive 32-18 victory at Sardis Road last Friday.

But Jones has warned his players they will have to go up a few more gears if they are to overcome Merthyr in front of a bumper crowd in north Wales.

“Last weekend’s win has given us a lot of confidence because not many sides go to Sardis Road and win,” said Jones.

“But we will have to raise our game even further if we are to beat Merthyr. They are going to pose a stern test around the set-piece and the physical side of the game.

“They’ve got a very strong scrum, an efficient line-out, and their power game is excellent especially when they get their offloading game going.

“That level of power can be very difficult to handle so we need to make sure our defence is up to scratch and we win the collisions otherwise they will get a lot of momentum.

“We have a tough run of games coming  up with Llandovery, Newport and Carmarthen Quins after Merthyr so we need to get some more points on the board during this block.

“Any points on Friday night would be tremendous in our ambition of competing for the Premiership title.”

Friday night’s clash will be the second week running the Gogs will have played in front of the Scrum V cameras.

And former Wales wing Jones insists the extra exposure has given the club a massive boost this season.

“Playing on TV has given the whole club a lift and it has given us greater exposure,” said Jones.

“We were lucky enough to play Pontypridd last weekend in front of the TV cameras and I think all the boys enjoyed that experience.

“Winning makes it a bit more of a pleasurable experience, but to get the cameras up at Eirias has got everybody excited.

“We are expecting a very good turnout with an estimated crowd of roughly 3,000.”
