A true family affair at Ruthin

It will be a true family affair at Ruthin Rugby Club tomorrow with not one but two sets of father and son partnerships set to take to the field for the club’s 2nd XV against Bethesda.

Club veterans Andy and Gareth Edwards (no relation), who have turned out for Ruthin sides for more than 50 years between them – will be joined on the Cae Ddol pitch by their sons Dillon and Bryn. The match will be one of three home matches for Ruthin tomorrow.

Club vice chair Sioned Foulkes said, “It will no doubt be a proud moment for both families and all concerned. The dads are true stalwarts of the club, especially the 2nd XV and the boys have just finished playing for our Youth team so 2nd XV rugby is a great way to transition to the senior game.

“We have a strong mini and junior section who successfully feed into our youth team and then our senior teams and this is a fine example of that. Our seconds are doing well this season, including ammassing 18 tries since the start of the season. The firsts, seconds and youth are all at home tomorrow so it should be a great occasion.”

Foulkes says the future is looking bright at the club for women and girls’ rugby too.

“Girls’ rugby is developing well through the Ruthin Ravens cluster and we are also hoping to restart a senior women’s team this season.”
