The unbeaten Division 1 North leaders have gone eight games without defeat to date this season and hurtled into the next round of the Plate thanks to a 50-5 home win over Maesteg Celtic. Blaenavon, currently sitting in seventh place in Division 1 East, reached the fourth round with a 29-17 home win over Crymych.
The two clubs met in the second round of the Plate in the 2016/17 season. On that occasion Llandudno just came out on top 30-27 at home in 2016/17 before going out at Abercarn. Now their dreams of going all the way to the final at Principality Stadium are still very much alive and kicking.
Outside half Nick Dundee and skipper Dave Davies gavce Llandudno a flying start with tries in the opening 10 minutes against Celtic and it became a procession from there on. Kelvin Davies and Dan O’Sullivan both crossed in the first half and two conversions from Dundee made it 24-5 at the break.
Byron Davies, Oscar Lennon, Lloyd Evans crossed for second half tries and Dundee’s boot did the rest of the damage as he ended with a match tally of 15 points. Fellow north Walians Pwllheli also made it through thanks to an impressive 23-18 win at Birchgrove.
The home side were unbeaten before Pwllheli arrived having won six and drawn one of their league games to sit proudly on top of Division 2 West Central. Pwllheli now host Mountain Ash, who beat Skewen 16-14, at the weekend.
Reigning champions Brynmawr will have another home tie in round three after their 41-0 romp against Llangennech. They will host Glamorgan Wanderers, who are fourth in Division 1 East Central, following their 54-7 home win over Denbigh.
Division 1 East Central leaders Rhiwbina will entertain Llanelli Wanderers in another great clash. The Squirrels son a local derby against St Joseph’s, 23-10, while the Wanderers were 22-15 victors’ over Brynamman.
Former champions Heol y Cyw (2013) and Penallta (2012, 2017) will meet, while the 2009 and 2011 winners, Ammanford, are one of five sides with a bye.
