Bragging rights may have been with Glantaf in recent seasons, but there are seeds of a revival at Sam Warburton’s old alma mater following wins by Whitchurch over Newport HS (17-7) and Gower College last week (26-5).
But the real feather in the cap would be a win over their ‘noisy neighbours’ at the Glamorgan Wanderers ground tonight (Tuesday, 20 April, 7.30pm). For the second week in a row Glantaf are the televised team (S4C Chwaraeon) and last week the Whitchurch players got a glimpse of what they will have to face.
A stunning second half comeback from Glantaf saw them overhaul last season’s runners-up, and current table-toppers, Coleg Sir Gar 31-24 at the Arms Park. Wales Under 18 lock Teddy Williams, one of the try scores against
Sir Gar, will captain the Glantaf side at a ground where his father, former Wales international Owain, first made a name for himself in the Wanderers back row.
“The games against Glantaf are always special and there is always a derby atmosphere. They are doing really well at the moment and it was a big win for them over Sir Gar last week,” said Whitchurch HS coach, Steve Williams.
“We’ve had two wins in a row without playing to our very best. There is room for improvement and we know we’ll have to be at our very best to come out on top against Glantaf.”
Sir Gar head to Bridgend College on Wednesday, 21 November, while reigning champions Coleg Y Cymoedd host Cardiff & Vale College, who recently toppled Glantaf.
