Scarlets Under 18s make it three from three

The Scarlets made it three from three in the first phase of the Regional Age Grade U18 tournamnet as they inflicted a second defeat on reigning champions the Dragons at Parc Y Scarlets.

First half tries from No8 Leon Samuel and prop Sam O’Connor edged the home side into a 15-7 interval lead and hooker an captain Morgan Macrae and wing Dyland Richards ensured the bonus point after the break with further tries.

Full back Alex Wainwright chipped in with a conversion and penalty and outside half Jac Tregoning added two conversions to complete a 29-17 victory. The young Scarlets had beaten Ospreys (22-12) and RGC (19-15) in their previous outings.

The Ospreys ended their three match block with a first win as they beat the Blues 20-12. Second half tries from Oliver Burrows and Luke Weaver hauled the home side past the battling Blues, who led 7-5 at the break thanks to a Theo Cabango try that Ben Burnell converted.

Jordan Evans notched the first half try for the Ospreys, while a try from Corben Evans after the break for the Blue took them back ahead at 12-10. The Ospreys complete their first block of matches against RGC at Aberavon on Sunday.

The Gogs have yet to win a game, but have been highly competitive at both U18 and U16 levels. Although beaten 46-12 by the Blues in their opening game, they gave the Scarlets a tough test before going down 19-15 at home.

At U16 level, the north Walians picked up a highly impressive 55-12 win over Dragons Black in a game that saw Huw Davies score four tries. Cain Jones got two of his own in a match tally of 22 points and the visitors cross the Dragons’ line eight times.

RGC host Dragons Red this weekend and will be looking to round off a successful first phase with another victory. Still to play next week are Scarlets East v Blues North and Blues South v Ospreys West.

The two Ospreys sides are currently unbeaten, with the East division having picked up wins over Scarlets West (26-12), Blues North (19-5) and Blues South (26-7). Ospreys West drew their opening game against Dragons Black (31-31) and then beat Dragons Red (43-7) and Scarlets East (21-7)
