Llandrillo lead the way after flying start

Coleg Llandrillo

Coleg Llandrillo are top of the Welsh Schools & Colleges League after three rounds

Coleg Llandrillo are sitting proudly on top of the National Schools & Colleges League after three rounds and will be looking to stay there when they host Gower College at Parc Eirias this week.

Harri Hughes came up with a try hat-trick as the Gogs put Bridgend College to the sword with a 50-3 away win last week. Siencyn Metclafe ran in two tries and there were further scores from Dafydd Williams, who also kicked four conversions, Iwan Roberts and Sam Hughes.

Their flying start to the season has earned them three bonus-point wins to stay one point clear of Coleg Y Cymoedd, although the champions flexed their muscles with 12 tries in their 71-15 win over Pembrokeshire College at Sardis Road last week.

Five tries and four conversions took them into a 31 point lead before the visitors got on the board with an Osian Hill penalty. The home onslaught continued unabated and their tries came from a Ben Miller hat-trick, two from Cole Morgan and one each from Ryan Jenkins, Cameron Winnett, Rhys Anstey, Rhys Dauncey, Corey Burke and Jake Lee.

Tyler Morris kicked six conversions and Mitch Jones chipped in with two to complete the scoring. They head to Llandovery College in Round 4.

Whitchurch HS got back to winning ways with a comprehensive 38-12 triumph at Newport HS last week and will have to be at their best when they head west to face Coleg Sir Gar in this week’s televised match. Scrum half Morgan Oliver picked up 11 points with a try and three conversions and Josh Nott, Max Tustin and Jay Higgins, twice, also crossed the home line to go with a penalty try.

Centre Eddie James scored two of Sir Gar’s six tries as they took Gower College’s unbeaten record last week. They turned-over the home side 34-7.

Cardiff & Vale College, who host Newpport HS this week, led 14-8 at the break at Ysgol Glantaf before a second home try from Osian Gatehouse cut the gap to a single point at the start of the second half in Round 3.
It looked as though it was going to be a very tight derby clash, but then CAVC put their foot on the gas and turned the game into a rout with five tries without reply.

Prop Nathan Evans, full back Ioan Cooper, wing Jake Thomas (2), flanker Iestyn Galton, hooker Nathan Evans and replacements Lloyd Dove and Jan Schoonbeek all scored tries for the visitors. Outside half Drew Musa kicked five conversions and Schoonbeek added a sixth.

Wing Sam Morris and prop Lui Hewlett gave Gwent College a flying start against Neath Port Talbot College as they bagged early tries last week. Joe Westwood converted them both to make it a 14 point lead before home centre Logan Phillips struck back with a try that Joe Hawkins improved.

Replacement forward Lloyd Thomas grabbed a third try for the visitors, which Westwood once again converted, to make the game same before NPTC bagged a penalty try to cut the gap to one score. Given they had three players sent to the sin-bin, Gwent College did well to contain their hosts.
