Cardiff’s bid for double glory this season has been dealt a cruel blow with a season ending injury to rising back row star Alex Everett.

The 23-year-old former Cardiff University graduate, who has been one of the mainstays in the Blue & Blacks’ pack this season, was carried off the field on a stretcher at Parc Y Scarlets at the weekend 30 minutes into the Specsavers National Cup holder’s 35-20 quarter-final victory over Llanelli.

The Kent-born back row man, who was in the Saracens Junior Academy before heading to the Welsh capital to study, was taken to Glangwili Hopsital, in Carmarthen. He was treated on the pitch for 15 minutes while his dislocated ankle was put back in place before being taken away by ambulance.

He is due to undergo surgery in Cardiff this week and is likely to be out of action for some time. His injury cast a shadow over Cardiff’s four try victory that saw them take another step closer to retaining their title as they joined Aberavon, Merthyr and Carmarthen Quins in the semi-finals.

Head coach Steve Law will learn on Tuesday night (28 January) how long he will have to cope without a second back row man when his captain, Morgan Allen, faces a WRU disciplinary panel after his sending off in the defeat at Carmarthen Quins for an alleged stamp on the head of a home player.

Prop Will Davies-King, full back Edd Howley and lock Sam Pailor crossed for first-half tries for the visitors as they built up a 27-10 interval lead. Jonny Lewis grabbed the home try and Ioan Hughes added the conversion and a penalty.

went over after a series of pick and drives. Gareth Thompson converted. That lead was double a few minutes later when a loose Llanelli pass on the Cardiff ten metre line was picked up by Edd Howley. No one touched the fullback as he raced in. Thompson again added the extras.

Llanelli scored two more tries in the second half, through wing Kalum Evans and No 8 Nathan Hart, but a second try from Howley, and a late Joe Scrivens penalty, eased the holders through to the final four.
