Bridgend getting into shape for new season

Chris Williams is one of the experienced players staying with the Ravens

Bridgend’s battle to stay on the top flight of Welsh rugby next season has been boosted by the re-signing of 22 of the squad from 2019/20.

The Ravens finished bottom of the Indigo Group Premiership table when lockdown came last season and were facing a battle for survival with one team destined to drop into the Championship. But head coach Steve Jones will be hoping to hit the ground running when rugby returns with a group of settled players.

With the Ospreys having backed out of their ownership of the club, selling on to the supporters’ backed Clwb Rygbi Penybont ar Ogwr company, everyone at the Brewery Field is looking to next season for a new start.

Among the returning back line players will be three who have made more than 150 appearances for the club, centre Nathan Edwards, German international outside half Jamie Murphy and scrum half Chris Williams, while goalkicking full back Owen Howe goes all the way back to the 2015 Cup winning team.

Wings Tyler Williams and Andrew Evans are also staying put, as is Adam Jones, who scored a try on his home debut in the club’s last game of last season. Stuart Floyd-Ellis, who notched his half-century of games last season, is another influential midfield presence who has agreed to stay.

Outside half Jacob Chilcott has signed up for a second season, while the highly promising Jacob Lloyd will be hoping to put injuries behind him when the season starts. The list of retained forwards is due out later this week.
