Their 29-10 victory came despite two yellow cards and going behind to an early penalty. First half tries from full back Harry Fuller and outside half Steff Evans eased them into a 12-3 interval lead and they picked up three more tries after the break to take the full five points.
It leaves Euros Evans’ side three points clear of reigning champions Cardiff & Vale College with two rounds left to play. If they can beat Coleg Llandrillo at home next week then they will be guaranteed a top two finish and a place in the Cup Final at Principality Stadium on Wednesday, 7 December.
Back row man Tiaan Sparrow scored the pick of the Sir Gar tries in the second half, but Llandovery notched the best try of the game with a counter-attack from their own 10 metre line that ended with wing Rhys Stephens speeding up the touchline to bring his side back to within one score.
“It was a bit edgy at times, as you’d expect from a local derby, but we came on strong in the final quarter to pick up a bonus point. We seem to do that in a lot of games and we are definitely a fit side,” said Evans.
“We’re now just a win away from reaching the final and so it is one big effort in our home game against Llandrillo next week to reach our goal.”
It is looking likely they will have to face Cardiff & Vale College in what will be a battle of the two heavyweight teams from this season. Sir Gar went to Cardiff and beat Martyn Fowler’s champions by a single point in their first meeting, but since then CAVC have powered on without losing again.
They picked up five more points in a 54-14, eight try home win over Neath Port Talbot College in Round 11 and now have to face Gower College and Whitchurch HS in their final two fixtures. Five more points could be good enough to hold off Coleg Y Cymoedd in third, but two more wins will definitely see them back at Principality Stadium to defend their title.
Hooker Saul Hurley and Ethan Rudjy both scored two tries, while the others came from Jac Saunders, Elijah Evans, Scott Delnevo, with his ninth of the campaign, and Connor Milton. Rhys Mottram moved to 91 points for the season with seven conversions.
Neath Port Talbot College had tries from Llewellyn Hawkes and Conrad Delfosse, both of which were converted by Charlie Thomas, but are still without a win this season.
Ysgol Glantaf kept alive their hopes of reaching the Plate Final as they triumphed 38-5 at Bridgend College, another team still seeking their first victory. Ben Thomas scored twice for the visitors and other tries flowed from Dewi Thomas, Ben Gerraghty, Dafydd Jones and Lloyd Lucas, with Lucas added four conversions.
Glantaf finish up with a home clash against Llandovery College and a long trek north to meet Coleg Llandrillo. Llandovery are now down in seventh place, one outside the top six who get to contest the three finals but can still make it to Principality Stadium if they can win their last two games.
Cymoedd sat out Round 11 and next week head west to meet bottom of the table Pembrokeshire College in a game they will be expected to win. If they pick up five points in that game they will be guaranteed at least a place in the Plate Final.
Coleg Gwent were made to work hard to win 24-22 at Whitchurch HS. Morgan Williams, Buster Bodkin and Marty Cotton scored their tries and Harry Ford kicked eight points to see them home.
For Whitchurch, it was another case of what have been as they lost their third game in a row by seven points or less. Matty Young scored two tries for the home side and Iestyn Hutchings got the other and also kicked two conversions and a penalty.
Owen Parry scored a hat-trick as Llandrillo beat Pembrokeshire College 52-12. There were also two from Josh Wynne in their eight try haul and six conversions from Owen Opie, while James Morgan and Dan Page crossed for the visitors.
Two penalties did the trick for Gower College as they pipped Newport HS 6-5 in a tense game in Gwent. Dray Jack-Griffin got the home try, while Jack Whitton and Sam Williamson kicked the vital goals for Gower.
