Cardiff Met moved to the top of the BUCS Super Rugby table last week with a commanding 34-15 home win over Leeds Beckett University in monsoon style weather at Cyncoed.

But Danny Milton’s men are now preparing for one of the games of the season at Loughborough on Wednesday, 30 November, to try to retain their lead. Bath University are also tied on 30 points with Met and Loughborough as the race for the league title remains as tight as ever.

Just behind the top three are Cardiff University on 27 points after they also picked up a bonus-point in their 31-14 home win over Nottingham University. Having led the table earlier in the season, they remain very much in the mix having already beaten Cardiff Met and Bath away from home.

The Archers scored five tries in their latest home win and will now be hoping to pick up their first win at Loughborough since7 February 2018, when they triumphed 24-18. Loughborough picked up three points in their 35-35 draw at Hartpury last week.

Cardiff University face two Welsh derby clashes in their three games before the Christmas break, starting with a trip to St Helen’s in Round 9. Swansea University are currently lying one off the bottom with one win in eight games and are in need of points to stay ahead of Leeds Beckett in order to avoid the dreaded drop.

Alan Flower’s capital city side then host Bath and Cardiff Met to end their first phase, a challenge their director of rugby is looking forward to.

“When we are able to turn out our top side, we have shown we are capable of beating any team in this league. We were efficient in beaten Leeds Beckett and know we will need to be at our best at Swansea for another intriguing derby,” said Flowers.

“Our pack is getting on top of teams, and we’ve got good experience behind the scrum. The games against the current top two, Bath and Cardiff Met, will be a great way to finish off the pre-Christmas phase.”

Swansea University head to Cyncoed, where they won last year, in Round 10 on 7 December and the second ‘Cardiff Clash’ of the season is at the Arms Park on 14 December.

Cardiff Uni famously won the first leg 27-24 in what was Cardiff Met’s ‘home’ fixture. Now they will be the hosts for a must-see game that is unlikely to be full of Christmas spirit! There were 4,000 fans at the game in October and more are expected for the next meeting.
