Veteran prop Pesticcio steers Squirrels to first win

You can’t keep a good man down and nobody was going to stop Rhiwbina’s veteran front row man Roy Pesticcio from grabbing the headlines as the Squirrels won their first league of the season at Dinas Powys.

Now 51, Pesticcio has been playing at the Cae Delyn-based club for the past 28 years. He started at hooker and has now moved to tight head prop.

His try enabled Rhiwbina to beat their hosts 22-5 in Admiral Division 1 East Central to finally get off the mark this season. That game was one of only a handful that survived the ice and snow on a bleak weekend for league rugby.

St Joseph’s leapfrogged Barry into fifth place as they secured a 31-20 victory. Iwan Dawes, grandson of Wales and British & Irish Lion centre John, opened the scoring for the hosts and further tries from Rory Pugh, Oli Young, Tom Calvery and Luke Connolly and three conversions from Rob Sweetman sealed an exciting win in a high scoring encounter.

Over in Division One West, Whitland’s game against Crymych was the only game that beat the weather. A penalty try was awarded to the away side, for a pull back. Gethin Gibby rounded off a slick team move when he gathered a delicately chipped ball to score under the posts.

Adam Phillips added three penalties and one conversion to send Crymych top, courtesy of Newcastle Emlyn’s game against Gowerton being called off.

In Division 2 East, unbeaten table toppers Abergavenny picked up another bonus-point win as they triumphed 45-15 at home against Croesyceiliog. That made it eight wins in a row to extend their lead at the top to 18 points over Talywain, who have three games in hand.
Caerleon picked up their first win of the season as they came out on top 36-22 at mid-table Caldicot. In Division 5, Crickhowell cut the gap at the top to three points behind unbeaten Crumlin as they beat Pontllanfraith 35-10, while the only game to survive in Division 6 saw Hartridge beat Girling 29-2.

In East Central, Llandaff went three points clear at the top in Division 4 thanks to a 16-10 win at Llantwit Major, while Canton picked up a 53-21 win over Tylorstown in Division 3. In Division 2, Gilfach Goch picked up their first win of the season with a 20-12 home win over Llantrisant.

Four games survived in the North, with Menai Bridge moving to the top of the Division 3 North West table with their 15-7 home win over Rhyl & District II. In Division 2, Abergele beat Newtown 18-15, Mold won 20-10 at Bangor and Nant Conwy II saw off Welshpool 51-5.

In West Central, Morriston’s big win over Pyle, 64-7, made it eight out of eight for them in Division 2 and moved them 11 points clear of second placed Builth Wells, who have games in hand. Maesteg Celtic moved up into fourth with their 22-15 win at Porthcawl.

In Division 3, Vardre were forced to dig deep in their table topping clash at Swansea Uplands, where their 23-16 victory took them to the top of the table. In the only other game played,
Tonmawr pipped Bryncoch 24-23. In Division 5, Pontyates beat Fall Bay 39-15.

In the West, Pontyberem lost or the seventh game in a row as they went down 49-0 at Tenby United, while in Division 3A St Clears extended their unbeaten run to eight games as they moved five points clear with their 19-7 win at Cardigan.
In the same division, Aberaeron won by a point against Lampeter, 18-17, as did Laugharne at home to Neyland, 23-22, while Llanybydder were comfortable 31-10 winners at home over Llangwm and St David’s triumphed 12-10 at home against Pembroke Dock Quins.

In Division 3B, Penygroes moved into second thanks to their 28-25 home win over Tumble. They are no only a point behind league leaders Amman United.
