Coach Jason Strange is under no illusions of the challenge facing his Ebbw Vale side as travel to North to face RGC to keep themselves in the play-off places in the Indigo Premiership.

The Steelman are in fourth place in the table knowing a win would close the points  gap on third-placed Llandovery who suffered defeat at home to an impressive Merthyr in midweek.

Vale beat Llanelli 36-26 at Parc Y Scarlets in their last outing and hit the road to face an RGC side who lost to Newport 20-10 in a rearranged fixture at Bedwas last weekend.

Strange admits the journey to RGC, who are seventh in the table, poses its own unique challenges as his side look for a ninth win of the season.

“It is an unusual challenge with the travel and we only played them about four weeks ago in the cup, so we have changed things around,” said Strange.

“We have only trained once this week because we want to keep the players fresh and engaged in what we are doing.  Ceri Jones has done a really good job with RGC, he is organised and they are a well coached side with a lot of full-time youngsters with real talent.

“They caused us problems last time out and we know the ruck and the breakdown will be a big focus in this game. We have watched the Newport game and it was hard to really get much out of the game because of the weather and it it was really attritional battle.

“We are hoping the RGC pitch will be better for both sides and that we can play some rugby but we are expecting a real challenge up there.

“We were disappointed with our performance against Llanelli but to come away with all five points was the key thing. “All of the coaches and players were disappointed with our performance but that shows how far we have come in the last four or five months.”

Premiership leaders Cardiff host a resurgent Newport side in a classic Derby at the Arms Park with the home side still well clear of all comers but the Black and Ambers will be looking to build on their recent win over RGC.

Newport’s hopes of getting into the running for a play-off place in the Indigo Premiership could hang on the results of their next two games.

The Black & Ambers head to the Arms Park to resume hostilities with their ancient rivals Cardiff this weekend and then welcome Llandovery to Spytty Park on Saturday, 21 January.

Bridgend face Pontypridd in a basement battle at the Brewery Field, with both sides looking to restore some pride after a disappointing league campaign. Swansea host bottom side Carmarthen Quins at St Helen’s.
