Two try Goodchild steers Cardiff to big win

Cardiff warmed up for their top of the table clash with Llandovery by running in nine tries in another big bonus-point win at the Arms Park, beating Llanelli 57-28.

Steve Law’s side are now eight points clear of the Drovers, who have a game in hand, and so need to be at their best when they travel to Church Bank on 2 March for one of the gameóf the season.

A highly competitive first-half saw the Blue & Blacks take the lead with a penalty try in the 16th minute. Llanelli responded quickly with a try of their own from hooker Joe Rees which Wales U20 outside half Josh Phillips improved to level the scores.

The visitors were giving a good account of themselves, but then got hit with a three-try salvo just before the break. James Beal intercepted to run to the line for a try that Dan Fish converted in the 33rd minute and then a loose kick into midfield by Llanelli allowed deadly Dewi Cross to race over for his 16th try of the campaign.

Fish couldn’t add the extras to that try but did convert Ryan Wilkins bonus-point score on the stroke of half-time that gave the home side a 26-7 interval lead.

It all went downhill from there for Llanelli, whose patched-up side became a bit fractured. They did, however, manage to conjure up three more tries in the second half to at least leave the Welsh capital with a try bonus-point.

Nathan Hart powered over, Phillips broke clear to reach the posts and Gareth George went clear to add the fourth at the death. That showed their individual potential, but teamwork remains a big work .

Cardiff plundered five more tries, two of them coming from full back Joe Goodchild. Centre Arron Pinches picked up a loose ball to race 40 metres for another and scrum half Tom Habberfield and skipper Morgan Allen, from the rocksolid base of a five metre scrum, got the others.

Scorers: Cardiff: Tries: J Goodchild 2, Pen Try, J Beal, D Cross, R Wilkins, M Allen, A Pinches, T Habberfield; Cons: D Fish 4. Llanelli: Tries: J Rees, N Hart, J Phillips, G George; Cons: J Phillips 4
