The home side, who have two more crucial games coming up in the next fortnight at home against Rhydyfelin and second placed Rumney, were in irrepressible mood as they made the most of former league leaders St Peter’s slipping to a first home defeat.

There were two tries each for Corey Dunn and Matthew Evans and solo efforts from six other players. For good measure, skipper Jacob Lloyd added seven conversions.

St Peter’s, despite tries from Joe Coughlan and Harry Gimson, dropped from first to third due to a 20-12 home defeat to Cambrian Welfare while Rumney maintained their grip on second with a seven try mauling of Porth Quins at home. Tim Rogers got the first of the seven and Chris Maton added a couple of conversions, including one for a try by his brother, Tom.

Penallta produced a brilliant purple patch that included three tries at the end of the first half of their home clash with Brecon in Division 1 East. That took them from a 10-3 deficit into a handy 22-10 interval lead.

Both teams scored four tries in a game that ended up as a Penallta win by 27-22. Top of the table Newbridge picked up their 13th successive bonus-point win thanks to a 73-10 win at Blaenavon. Full back Robbie Turley helped himself to 21 points with eight conversions and one of the 11 tries, while second placed Brynmawr won 45-20 at home to Nelson.

In the North, Nant Conwy extended their unbeaten run to 11 games to stay 15 points clear after their 61-12 home win against Llangefni. In Division 1 West Central, Kenfig Hill put a dent in Ammanford’s title ambitions as they beat them 30-27.

With Bonymaen picking up another bonus-point win at home against Waunarlwydd, 40-21, they are now 10 points adrift of the leaders.

Crymych stayed top of Division 1 West thanks to a 12-10 home win over Gowerton. It had been a close run thing in their first meeting of the season, when the Preseli men triumphed 25-23, and the second game followed a similar course.

Owain Evans scored a try to give the home side the lead before Gowerton went ahead with a Lloyd Dudley-Jones try and a conversion and penalty from Johnny George to lead 10-5 at the break. The only score of the second half was an Ifan Phillips try for Crymych which Adam Phillis improved to earn another two point triumph.
