Y Pant School celebrate winning the Under 14 Intermediate Group Year 8 Cup Final

Harri Lewis and Regan Gibbons were the toast of Y Pant School as they both ran in two tries to help see off reigning champions Bro Morgannwg 24-7 in the Welsh Schools Intermediate Group National U14 Cup Final at Principality Stadium.

Liam Williams scored Bro Morgannwg’s only try, but they were outgunned for much of a fiercely contested tussle under the closed roof in the Welsh capital.

Y Pant, spurred on by watching their Pontyclun compatriots lift the John Rees U11 Cup just minutes earlier, raced into a 12-point lead early in the first half. Gibbons received the ball just inside his own half and sped down the wing to open the scoring.

They doubled their lead through Lewis, who bundled through to score after a well-worked lineout routine, with conversion points added by Gibbons.

Bro Morgannwg cut the deficit through a corner try from Williams after he received an offload from Dan Thomas to score just before the interval.

WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY . . .  Y Pant head coach Dafydd Davies
“It was absolutely incredible to see the side win, they are a fantastic group of boys. They work so hard inside and outside of school on their rugby.

“The experience for them of playing in the national stadium, and to create memories together of winning the cup, is fantastic.

“We knew it was going to be a tough ask and Bro Morgannwg gave us an amazing test, but we will enjoy tonight.”

Y Pant started the second half stronger, with star man Gibbons crossing again to extend the Pontyclun school’s lead. Lewis then added another to increase the lead to put the game beyond doubt and seal the victory.

WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY . . . Bro Morgannwg head coach Rhys Spiner
“I am thoroughly proud of the Bro Morgannwg boys. It was a well-deserved victory for Y Pant, they played some excellent expansive rugby so fair play to them for the win.

“We were lucky last year when we got here that we were well supported from the pupils and staff who organise everything. I’m very grateful to our fans.”
