Former Welsh international Nathan Thomas, the College’s director of rugby, has already seen his side beat Coleg Y Cymoedd, Ysgol Glantaf, Coleg Gwent and Coleg Llandrillo, and will be seeking another win to stay on top of the table.

“We thought that with the four games we’ve had to date we could be competitive, and the win over Glantaf (23-21) really gave us confidence,” said Thomas.

“We’ve got quite a few players back from last season and Griff Watkins has come in from England and made a massive impact in our midfield. We knew little about him, but he has been in the Welsh Exiles programme and we’ve been very happy with his progress.

“Joe Denman is leading the side from the back row and is playing really well, although we know that Whitchurch will provide very gritty opposition. They played over the weekend at the St Joseph’s Tournament, in Ipswich, so we’ll be looking to get off to a fast start.”

The battle for a top two spot will be up for grabs in Cardiff where Coleg Sir Gar to take on Glantaf. There are only two points between them and the home side will be buoyed by their 19-16 win over last season’s champions, Cardiff & Vale College.

“It is a big game in terms of who is going to finish in the top two. That will earn a home semi-final spot,” said Sir Gar director of rugby, Euros Evans.

CAVC head to Coleg Gwent, who have yet to post a win, and will be looking for a maximum return as they fight to stay in the top four for the play-offs.

There will be a battle of the new boys at Ysgol Ystalyfera where Christ College, Brecon, head on Conference B. Ystalyfera are unbeaten after their first four game and are one point behind Gower College, who head to Pembrokeshire in the fifth round.
