Newport continue to keep the pressure on at the top of the Indigo Premiership as they came from behind to win 26-15 at Cardiff and make it five straight wins.

Tries in each half from wing Lloyd Lewis – his seventh in the league so far this term – and full-back Ioan Davies along with two conversions and four penalties from the boot of outside half Carwyn Penny secured the spoils for the Black and Ambers.

Centre Luke Pollock and outside half Harrison James scored for Cardiff with the latter adding five points from the tee.  The win for Newport saw them avenge their 38-15 Premiership Cup exit at the Arms Park back in September.

They suffered their only league defeat so far at home by Swansea a week later but since then have reeled off wins over Carmarthen Quins, Aberavon, Merthyr, Pontypridd and now Cardiff. The big games keep on coming, with Ebbw Vale up next at Newport Stadium on Saturday, when a bonus-point win would take them a point above Llandovery before then heading to Church Bank on 25 November.

“We hit a bit of a stumbling block against Swansea where I thought we didn’t play great, but we’ve got momentum and it’s going really well,” said Newport head coach Ty Morris after the win at Cardiff.

“It was a tough game; obviously we know that Cardiff can be very good at the Arms Park, they turned us over in the cup there, so we were expecting a tough game and it didn’t disappoint.

“We’re just building and continuing to get better each week and it’s a big month for us with Cardiff, Ebbw Vale and Llandovery – which will go a long way to seeing where we’ll end up in that top four after this month I think.

“Heading into Ebbw Vale, a derby game – we were successful against Pontypool opening game at Rodney Parade and now we’ve got to bring the same level of commitment and accuracy at Spytty next weekend.”

Merthyr won for the fourth time at The Wern this season as they hit Aberavon for six in a 49-25 thriller. Back-rower Lennon Greggains, scrum-half Ethan Lloyd, wing Adam Hoskins, hooker Liam Wiggins, centre Josh Lewis and full-back Ben Jones all crashed over for the Ironmen, who led from the first minute and had their noses in front 29-18 at the break.

Lewis finished with a 24-point personal match haul, converting five of the tries and kicking three penalties.  Aberavon scored four tries of their own to at least return home with a bonus point.

Chris Banfield and Sam Jardine scored in the first half while Shay Smallman and Aron Hemmings dotted down in the second for Jason Hyatt’s side. James Davies kicked three conversions and three penalties.

RGC made it three home wins on the spin as they defeated Carmarthen Quins 38-12. Christian Hone, Dafydd Williams, Patrick Nelson, Sam Earl-Jones and Ollie Wynn scored for the Gogs, who had raced into a 28-0 lead by half time,  Earl-Jones converting all five tries and adding a penalty for a match tally of 18 points.

Swansea’s long wait for a first win at Sardis Road since 2001 goes on after they were beaten 35-18 by Pontypridd – who themselves bounced back from their heavy 54-3 loss at Newport. It was the Whites who drew first blood through a Cameron Jones try after a terrific break from Harri Houston.

Josh Phillips kicked two penalties to nudge Ponty in front before centre Ben Burnell scored at the posts – his first try since re-joining Pontypridd last month following the demise of English Championship club Jersey Reds – and Phillips added the extras.

Brandon Wood kicked a penalty either side of the interval for Swansea before Dale Stuckey scored Ponty’s second try which went unconverted. Another Phillips penalty was soon followed by a try for Je Scrivens, which Phillips converted.

Houston was then over for Swansea, converted by Wood, before Macauley Rowley grabbed the bonus point try for Ponty which Phillips improved.

Bridgend ended a four-game losing streak as they beat Ospreylian rivals Neath 26-19 at The Gnoll.

Edd Howley and Chris Williams scored tries for the Ravens. Luke Price converted both while also kicked three penalties and a late drop goal.

Kristian Jones scored Neath’s try, converted by Steff Williams – who added four penalties.
