And to make it an even more special day for the club they fielded four sets of brothers in their matchday squad. Not only that, but one member of each family scored a try to make it a great start in ‘Tiger Town’.
There has been plenty of brotherly love going around in Welsh rugby in recent years with Jonathan and James Davies playing for the Scarlets and Wales, Angus and Matt O’Brien being part of the Dragons set-up and Llandovery now fielding three sets of brothers in their Indigo Premiership squad.
But there was no holding the Harrises, Williamses, Joneses and Jameses as they powered their way over to get the centenary celebrations underway in fine style.
It was centre Steve James who picked up the first score, although he then had to take a 10 minute break with his brother Shaun after they both got embroiled in a fracas in the wake of the try. That gave the home side a 10-8 interval lead.
Cellan Harris was next to score, quickly followed by Owen Williams and Darren Jones. Brother Gethin, Rhys and Gareth all looked on with nodding approval. While having four sets of brothers in the same team may be a record for Welsh rugby (let us know if you can beat that), it is someway short of the most players from one family playing together.
Last season four Griffiths brothers from Llanelli teamed up together in the Felinfoel 2nd XV and way back in 1909 there was an even bigger family gathering on the field in Carmarthen.
