Dragons must improve basics – Edwards

Darren Edwards believes his Newport Gwent Dragons side must cut out the errors from their game when they face Ulster at Ravenhill this evening.

The Welsh region return to action just five days after their LV= Cup semi-final defeat to Gloucester and acting head coach Edwards believes his side must improve on the basics in their game if they are to continue their good run of form in Belfast.

The Dragons haven’t lost in the City since 2008 but Edwards knows it is going to be a tough challenge.

“Nothing really went right in Gloucester, we showed some glimpses in attack but our basics were poor, and it is those basics that count away from home against the better sides,” he said.

“We have got some special players that can break the game up but we are never going to get the ball to them unless our basics are right.

“It’s a tough one because of limited preparations but we just have to get on with it and the attitude has been excellent in training. The guys really want to respond to a poor performance last week.

“It has been a tough week, more so because it’s a Sunday to a Friday game, but it has also probably been our best working week.

“Players don’t tend to listen much when things are going well but this week they have soaked up information like sponges.

“They want to know how they can improve and it has fuelled a lot of ambition. Now we have to capitalise on that.”
