Whirlwind return for Tredegar Ironsides

One year on, the Ironsides have clinched the SWALEC Division 6 East trophy with a 10 -19 away win over Hollybush to also continue their undefeated season in the league.

Tredegar Ironsides carried off the title by nine points, winning all the league games that they’ve played this season. The club are already planning for life in their new division with preparations already well under way. A brand new gym facility is near completion and there will be a “revolutionary training strategy in place” according to the Blaenau Gwent club.

Tredegar Ironsides Club Captain Craig Monaghan said: ”Winning the league is a really big achievement for us. We had a goal at the beginning of the season to win it undefeated, and it feels great to say now that we’ve done it. The team have really stuck together this season, and captured the spirit of what playing for Ironsides is all about.”

Head Coaches Nigel Quirke and Lewis Protheroe said: ”After the trials and tribulations last year, winning the title is everything to the club at the moment. We’re so pleased for the supporters, the club and the players.”

Top try scorer Jason Jones, who plays No 8 for the club, couldn’t continue his scoring ways due to injury but joined the supporters who had travelled to the Aberbargoed club.

WRU representative Ken Hewitt added: “A good performance from both teams, but well done to the Tredegar Ironsides. It was a tough game and they played well to secure the win.”
