The Welsh Rugby Heroes 2016 competition opened today (Friday January 8) and Wales’ best loved baker, responsible for the famous Peter’s Pies, is asking for clubs and individuals to nominate their local rugby heroes – one of whom will win £5,000 of Under Armour kit and equipment for their club.
Whether they are the cleaner or club secretary, team manager or treasurer, linesman or lifelong club supporter, Peter’s wants to hear from you and why you think your hero deserves the title of Peter’s Welsh Rugby Hero 2016.
Commercial Director for Peter’s, James Osgood, said: “Peter’s wants to celebrate and acknowledge the work of these committed individuals by holding a competition to identify the nation’s Welsh Rugby Hero. Rugby players are the tip of the iceberg of a much larger group of club members and volunteers that form the foundation of the game, without whom we wouldn’t have rugby, at any level.”
WRU chairman Gareth Davies added, “Community clubs are where, as players, we develop our love for the game, and that passion, and values of rugby union are passed down by the coaches, team managers, kit men and women, first aiders, dinner ladies and all the other volunteers that make clubs tick. We are grateful to Peter’s for recognising the value of our tireless volunteers in organising this competition.”
The competition welcomes submissions from across Wales until midnight on 21st February, after which, a panel of judges will shortlist fifteen entrants, all of whom will win an official Welsh Rugby Union jersey and £100 of Under Armour kit. It will then be down to the public to choose their favourite nominee who will be crowned Welsh Rugby Hero 2016 and win £5,000 of Under Armour kit and equipment for their club. Prizes will also be given for 2nd and 3rd places, of £3,000 and £2,000 of Under Armour kit respectively.
