PREM PREVIEW: Merthyr hold no fears for Hyatt

Aberavon head coach Jason Hyatt insists his side have the self-belief to beat Merthyr at the Talbot Athletic Ground on Saturday evening.

Facing the defending champions will hold no fear for the Wizards. Aberavon downed defending champions the Ironmen at the Wern in September before a narrow defeat in the WRU National Cup.
“It’s going to be a very difficult and physical game but we have a lot of self-belief,” said Hyatt.

“We are playing some very good rugby at this moment in time and importantly our set-piece is going well. You’ve also got to show good intelligence at the set-piece.

“You’ve got to match them physically and take your chances because they are a very good defensive side. The reason we lost at home is we created chances, but we didn’t finish them.

“We are in a decent position in the table but we need to keep improving so that we can push on. Beating Merthyr would be a big statement of intent.”

Cardiff face Carmarthen Quins at the Arms Park tonight live on BBC Scrum V on Friday night. Steve Law’s side are third in the table and will want to keep the pressure on Merthyr at the top of the table.

Elsewhere on Friday night RGC1404 host second place Pontypridd. On Saturday Ebbw Vale will be looking to keep in touch with the top three as they face a struggling Bridgend outfit at the Brewery Field.

Matt Silva’s Ravens are just mere two points off the relegation zone and are in desperate need of a victory. Crisis club Neath welcome Richard Lancaster’s Swansea to The Gnoll for an Ospreys derby.

The Welsh All Blacks already look dead and buried while Swansea are looking to pull clear of the bottom. Bargoed are also entering must-win territory with David Lynch’s side 10 points off safety as they travel to face Cross Keys who currently occupy 11th place in the table.

This promises to be one of the most important games of the weekend with Keys themselves only three points clear of the bottom four. Bedwas, who are also fighting for survival, host high-flying Newport in a Gwent derby.

Stefan Sankala’s side will be hoping to bounce back from a disappointing defeat against Llandovery last weekend, while the Black & Amber’s occupy fifth spot. Llanelli face Llandovery at Parc Y Scarlets in a west Wales derby. Euros Evans’ Drovers are in a rich vein of form while Llanelli are in desperate need of points.
