Last season’s Bowl winners in the tournament, Whitchurch had centre Ben Spittle leading the charge with a hat-trick of tries. The Cardiff U18 speedster was joined by outside half Matty Young in notching 15 points, as the home No10 helped himself to a try and five conversions.
“It was a good start for us and we played some good rugby. We’d had a run out against both Bridgend and Neath Port Talbot College before the season started, so we were ready,” said Whitchurch HS veteran head coach, Steve Williams.
“We’ve got to go to Llandovery College next week and this will really have boosted the confidence of the players.”

As well as the 30 points contributed by Spittle and Young, there were also tries from Jack Sweeney, James Steele, Sol Rees, Chay Sinclair and Isaac Godfrey. Bridgend hit back with tries from Connor Jones and Liam Wyatt, both of which were converted by George Richards.
Gower College also reached the half-century mark as they romped to a nine-try, 55-12 home win over Pembrokeshire College. They also had a hat-trick hero in Matthew Boskey.
Former champions Coleg Sir Gar showed they could well be a candidate for top honours once again as they started with a 36-5 triumph over Newport HS. They crossed for five tries, one of which was a penalty try – Keanu Evans, Max Page, Matt Williams and Steff Evans got the others.
Dan Wall scored the only try for Newport HS, while Gwent College picked up a bonus-point in their 22-5 home win over Llandrillo College. Ryan Robertson scored the try for the north Walians, while Evan Barber (2), Harry Rees-Weldon and Rhia Jones crossed for the home side.
Llandovery College picked up a win on the road as they beat Neath Port Talbot College 17-10 at The Gnoll. Callum Griffiths scored the only home try and Charlie Davies added a penalty and conversion.
