Connor Lewis came off the bench and turned into a hero as he crossed for the winning try for Newbridge in the last move of the match to give last season’s Division 1 East champions a thrilling 20-16 win at Beddau in the Admiral Championship East.

An even contest throughout swung first one way and then the other in the dying minutes as the Gwent side fought to come out on top. Hooker Joel Gilbert converted a driving maul try in the first half to give his side then lead and then lock Jacob Duffy crashed over for a second to make it 13-13 in the second.

The Duffy try came in the 77th minutes and then Cody Baker took his match tally up to 13 points with a 79th minute penalty that put Beddau back in front. Moments later, Lewis ran in Newbridge’s third try and Eamonn Rees added the extras for good measure.

Ystrad Rhondda came out on top in the match of the day in the East as they beat the champions of two years ago, Bargoed 28-17. Player-coach Alex Webber scored one of the home side’s three tries, with Kurtis Williams and Corben Evans getting the others and Rhys Truelove kicking 13 points.

Rumney ran in seven tries, two each from skipper and flanker Lewis Hill and centre Tom Maton, in their 43-17 home win over Penallta, while last season’s Division 1 East Central champions St Peter’s were too hot for Glamorgan Wanderers to handle as they ran out 31-10 victors.

A late drop goal from James Dixon earned battling Bedwas a 20-19 victory at Cardiff Met. The students took the lead through a try by lock Liam Antrobus that outside half Sam Berry converted.

Bedwas got their noses in front by the break thanks to tries from Dale Rogers and Jack Guy, both of which Dixon improved to make it 14-7 to the home team.

Cardiff Met hit back with a try from wing Josh Carrington, but a Dixon penalty made it 17-12 coming into the final 10 minutes. Scrum half Zak Roberts then burst clear to score another try for the visitors that was converted by Berry and with eight minutes left Met lead by two points.

The stage was set for a home hero, and Dixon grabbed the glory with a drop goal that edged his side in front. There was one last chance for Berry to re-write the headlines, but his last-gasp penalty from half-way fell just short.

Cross Keys ran in five tries to pick up a bonus-point win, 34-17, against Treorchy at Pandy Park, while in the Championship West there are now three teams boasting unbeaten records after two rounds.

Narberth ran in 11 tries in their 67-5 triumph at Tata Steel, with four of them coming from wing Josh Evans, Brecon triumphed 37-29 at Llangennech and Dunvant beat Maesteg Quins 35-20.

Dunvant had 14 points from the boot of Joe Packer to thank for their win over the Quins. He converted all four home tries from Ben Ley, Adam Williams-Parry, Jack Cheyney and Jack Phillips, and also added two penalties.

Brecon made it a maximum 10 points from their opening two matches with their win at Llangennech. Jake Crockett and Sam Jones both grabbed try braces and Ben Griffin also crossed the home line.

Jake Newman kicked 12 points and Dion McIntosh weighed in with a penalty to complete the victory. Liam Hutchings crossed twice for the home side and there were further tries for Jordan Saunders, Harrison Button and Thomas Davies, two of which Luke Davies converted.

Newly promoted Crymych gave Ystalyfera a shock as they ran in six tries to triumph 47-18 at the Ynysydarren Ground. Star fo the show was Eilir George, who scored a try and kicked six conversions for a match tally of 17 points.

Other tries for the Pembrokeshire side came from Iestyn Wood 2, Edward Bennett, Rhydian Howells, Ifan Davies and Osian Davies.
