Jones Set For International Return

Jones Set For International Return

Llanelli and Wales outside-half Stephen Jones has recovered from his broken thumb and will be available for selection Wales’ RBS Six Nations meeting with Scotland on March 8.

Jones sustained the injury in the Scarlets recent Welsh Premiership match against Cardiff, but had the plaster removed on Wednesday. He has joined up with the Wales training squad, and he will begin full training imminently.

In his absence both Ceri Sweeney and Iestyn Harris have worn the Wales No. 10 jersey, and Jones will have a tough job wrestling the shirt back after respectable performances, particularly from Sweeney.

Sweeney impressed in his full debut England, but Jones is a stronger goal-kicker, and Wales boss Steve Hansen may opt for the security of the points machine as Wales prepare for the potential Wooden Spoon decider at Murray field next weekend.

But Llanelli’s flying wing Mark Jones will be unavailable for selection. He suffered concussion in Wales’ RBS Six Nations opening day defeat to Italy.

In accordance with IRB regulation 10.1 he must take three weeks away form competitive rugby.

The ruling states:

10.1 A Player who has suffered concussion shall not participate in any Match or training session for a minimum period of three weeks from the time of injury, and may then only do so when symptom free and declared fit after proper medical examination. Such declaration must be recorded in a written report prepared by the person who carried out the medical examination of the player.

The rest period will be completed period on 8 March.
