Merriman Makes Sevens Debut

Wales have named a young side for the IRB World Sevens Series at Cardiff Arms Park this weekend.

Gloucester’s James Merriman is the surprise name in the squad for the series, set to make his debut 7’s appearance at the age of 19. Merriman, who is studying for a BSc in Agriculture and Land Management and started at Hartpury in September of this year is formerly of Llandovery College.

Merriman has already represented his country at U16, U18 and U19 level has been tipped as a future Welsh International flanker. Last Summer he impressed on the U19 tour to South Africa and will played in next years Under 19 World Cup.

James has already played for the Gloucester Academy U19 side and is a Wales National Elite Squad member. He enjoys looking after his father farm at home and has a great attitude towards Hartpury and his rugby development.

The young open side flanker plays at Hartpury College as well as the Gloucester academy and has shone throughout Wales’ U19 FIRA campaign.

Newport flanker Jason Forster captains the side with a strong Newport contingent of Ben Breeze, Andy Powell and Jon Pritchard also in the 12-man squad.

Wales have a tough opening match against England, who are ranked 2nd in the series, kicking off at 10.14am on Saturday and it doesn’t get any easier in Pool B with the young Dragons also up against Russia and a strong French team at the two-day event.
